😎🐫🎤 Christ’s peace and presence be with you. St Augustine described a sacrament as an outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace. During the homily Sunday, while discussing John 6:51–58, Fr. Mike Holloran stated, “Jesus’ physical body is the outward sign of an inward grace.”
John 6:51–58, Jesus said to the crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world.”
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will have life because of Me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
First of all, when Jesus says, “Amen, amen”, that is a big clue to listen up and take note of what He is about to say. In this moment Jesus is offering His physical body and blood, so that you and I WILL receive and have the grace of eternal life with God. Isn’t that what we as Christians are striving for? Do you want to spend your eternal life in God’s presence?
But your eternal life wasn’t His entire focus. He gave us His broken flesh and blood poured out for a time such as this. He does not want you to face this life on your own. He wants to physically be with you on this journey. Why not start now? The Eucharist is Jesus Christ, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity! His physical presence in you, WILL change you.
